A 1500 strong 'Black Bloc' took to the streets of Paris during the annual May Day demonstrations and fought running battles with police for most of the day. This year had extra significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of May 1968, the tumultuous period in France's history which saw large scale strikes, occupations and protests nationwide.
Within a few hours of this year's demonstration the damage was intense in scale with a McDonalds's and Renault showroom completely destroyed, with police watercannons being used to put out the flames.
The protesters spread out throughout the city leaving barricades in their wake with police resorting to flooding the streets with tear gas.
By the time the fighting had fizzled out there had been over 100 arrested and surprisingly, a low number of injuries.
